31 Amazing Half up-Half down Hairstyles For Long Hair
If you haven’t been under a rock, you know that a half-up half-down hairstyle is possibly the most efficient way to get a gorgeous look. I don’t know if half-ups have had this name for a long time but people have been doing them forever. They started off mainly for formal events, and then they started to get more casual. If you have ever rocked a topknot or a half over braid, you have rocked this look. I started noticing them a few years ago at formal events like weddings. I would see the bride all done up and then the bridesmaids would be rocking a complimentary hairdo that was half up and half down. Then I started seeing some of my cousins rocking them for prom and homecoming type events, and now I am seeing them all over the place.
If you know anything about me, you know that I am curious and love to poke around on Pinterest, Google, and Instagram to see what the latest trends are so I can experiment and see what is actually good and what just looks elegant in pictures but then looks horrible in real life. I am also a huge fan of the messy and boho looks so I threw a few of those in here. I do, however, have straight hair, but I threw in a few for curly haired women and chicks that have to rock the curled hairstyle to get the volume they need. Either way, take a look at some of these badass half up half down hairstyles that I think are totally worth trying and I will be rocking them ASAP.
1. Half Up Half Down Hairstyle – Circle Barrette
If you haven’t tried a circle barrette yet, you are missing out on one of the easiest and quickest ways to pull off a ton of hairstyles, the half up half down included. For this tutorial, you literally just need two of these things and a quick curling iron to get a few waves going. As she mentions in the tutorial, putting in some hair spray or some texture will help the circle barrette stay in place. She started with one circle clip and that alone looks great and could be an alternative style here. Then she adds the second one lower on her hair. I think this look is beautiful because it’s messy but clearly has a pattern and looks well done.
2. Super Easy Braided Half-Up Half-Down How-To Hairstyle
When you are ready to hit the gas on this half up half down look, you gotta try throwing in a braid to make this hairstyle work. This takes a few bobbi pins and some hairspray. As she mentions in the tutorial, you can tease some of the underside to get more volume before you start using the bobbi pins. One of the things that is tricky about this look is having the two different braids be the same thickness. Once you get that part figured out though, the rest is a breeze. Get the braids in, hit it with the hairspray to lock it in place and prevent frizz, and you are ready to go for almost any formal event.
3. How To Create a Half Up Waterfall Braid Hair Style That Wows
Welcome to the waterfall braid, a really unique and complicated looking take on the half up half down look. If you know how to do a braid, and every girl does, then you can pull off the waterfall. It is so cute and can be used at a formal event or at a pool party just the same. If you have short hair, you are going to need to use a lot of spray to hold it in place but if you have medium length hair or longer, you should have enough length to lock the braids in without them coming apart. Side Note: The crazy thing about this technique is she doesn’t use any pins, it’s all just braids. If you have shorter hair, try using a bobbi and spraying it with hairspray so it’s a bit stickier and holds better.
4. Cute Starburst Braided Half-Up Bun Look
The starburst braided half updo is a combination of updo, braids, and bun all elegantly combined to make a beautiful hairstyle that is super formal and great for weddings, prom, homecoming, etc.. It’s also really simple in this tutorial. In ten steps she takes us from starting with a half pony to doing a french braid to throwing it into a bun. In less than ten minutes you are rocking a gorgeous half-up hairdo.
5. The Rosette Embellished Half Down Ponytail Tutorial
The rosette ponytail is super cute. It looks like a flower and it looks a bit messy but at the same time it looks so elegant and classy AF. I just love it. This tutorial is perfect for pulling it off. All you need is two clear hairbands, five bobby pins, some hairspray and a brush. The best part about this look is you get to show off your locks but you don’t have to just do a normal straight down hairstyle. Throwing the rose bun in there gives it sophistication and it’s a look that I love to pull out for work because it’s professional but not boring.
6. Cute And Quick – One Minute Knotted Half Up Hair Do
So you woke up late for work or school or whatever, and you maybe have some meeting or an event that you have to be at so you can’t just throw it into a pony and look like your headed to the gym. But you don’t have a bunch of time to do some complicated technique. Enter the one minute knotted half up. Again, you can tease it out to get some extra volume. The more you pull into each section that you are going to tie together, the bigger the knot in the back will be so be aware of that if you have super thick hair.
7. Simple Half Updo Hairstyle – Lacebraid Tutorial
As I mentioned before, I love a laid back look. The soft curl updo is basically like beauty waves but for an updo with a bun. I can see this look being really good for homecoming or prom. You definitely have to start with curling your hair to get the waves and then you’ll put it up. Again, spraying your bobbypins with hairspray first will help get the hold more sturdy.
8. Easy Half Up, Half Down Hair Wrap Tutorial
La Petite Noob makes a great point: my hair is a ton of work. I am constantly taking care of it and dealing with it and half the time it seems like ti doesn’t want to cooperate with me. As a certified lazy-girl, this is a tutorial that I can get behind. She says that it’s best to curl you hair a bit before you try this look but you can do it with straight hair as well.
9. Quick And Easy Half Up Dutch Braids Tutorial
The half up Dutch braid look is something I like to pull out for more formal events. Summer weddings and bridesmaids are what I think of when I see the dutch braid style. Warning: if your hair has too many layers or is short, it’s really hard to pull off on the sides. The top will look great but then it will start to get messy. If you are new to the Dutch braid, she literally shows you step by step exactly how to do the braid and then how to turn it into the half up half down hairstyle I love for weddings.
10. How To Recreate – Waterfall & Flower Braid Updo
For you half up half down rockstars, I decided to throw a gorgeous but complicated hairstyle in: The waterfall and flower braid updo. You start with the waterfall braid on one side and then when you get to the other side, you have to pull off the flower. You use one of the three strand braids as the outer part of the flower and then roll it up like you’re making a bun but with the braids, it will magically look like a flower! This is a great way to pull off a boho look that falls in like with the half up half down trend.
